Abstract: In compliance with the regulations stipulated in the “Nationwide Survey of Human Parasite Distribution”, an investigation on children and juveniles of 14 years old was carried out in 100 pilot sites located in 20 counties/cities of Guangxi in the years 1987-1989. Of the 19 341 subjects under fecal examination, 16 174 (83.6%) were found to infect with intestinal nematodes. Among the seven detected species, high infection rates were showed for Ascaris lumbricoides (69.2%), Trichuris trichiura (48.7%), hookworm (19.0%) and Enterobius vermicularis (35.5%), whilst the infection rates of Strongyloides stercoralis (0.8%) and Trichostrongylus orientalis (0.02%) were rather low. The results exhibited the extensiveness of common intestinal nematode infections in children and juveniles in the Region. The authors suggested that critical attention should be paid on intervention measures to control these nematode infections.
