Abstract:

Since the outbreak of angiostrongyliasis in Beijing in 2006, epidemiological investigations, surveillance and early warning, diagnosis and treatment, and other related studies had been conducted targeting this disease in China. During the past two decades, cluster outbreaks had been successively reported in Beijing Municipality, Guangning County of Guangdong Province, and Dali City of Yunnan Province. Although the overall number of reported angiostrongyliasis cases has declined during the past 20 years, cases continue to be detected in selected areas. In addition, intermediate hosts, such as Pomacea snails, have continued to spread, and the coverage of natural foci has expanded, indicating that angiostrongyliasis transmission risk remains. An angiostrongyliasis control system has been gradually built in China, which combines case surveillance, host surveillance, and risk early warning, and diagnostic criteria, expert consensus, and molecular diagnostic assays have been continuously improved. This article summarizes the epidemiological changes, surveillance and response, diagnosis and treatment, and research advances of angiostrongyliasis in China over the past 20 years, which provide insights into improvements in the disease control strategies.
