INVESTIGATION OF HUMAN INTESTINAL PROTOZOA IN THE SUBURBS OF GUANGZHOU

Abstract: An investigation of human intestitoal protozoa was carried out by stool examination in 8 villages via random sampling from two counties ia the suburbs of Guangzhou. Out of 4 265 inhabitants examined, 346 (8.1%) were found to be infected with protozoa. The infection rate of females was 9%, which was higher than that of the males (7%). The prevalence had a tendency to increase with age, showing 3.7% for under 6, 4.3-9.5% for 6-39, and 11.6-30.2% for over 40 years of age. Six species of intestinal protozoa were detected from, these villages, including: Giardia lamblia (2.9%), Enta-moeba coli (2.6%), Entamoeba hartmanni (1.6%), Endolimax. nana (0.8%), Enta-moeba histolytica (0.4%) and lodamoeba buetschlii (0.06%).
