Abstract: A survey of human parasites was carried out on 57 pilot spots of 19 counties of Gansu in the years 1987-1990, showing an overall infection rate of 44.8% in a population totalling 28 700 . The 20 discovered species of intestinal parasites were a big sum while adding to the three species, i.e. Echinococcus granulosus, E.multilocularis and Paragonimus westermani, reported previously, accounting for 23 species in total in the province. The parasites and their infection rates were presented as follows: Ascaris lumbricoides 37.5%, Trichuris trichiura 2.1% , hookworm 0.01%, Trichostrongylus sp. 0.003%, Strongyloides stercoralis 0.4%, Enterobius vermicularis 19.2%, Clonorchis sinensis 0.1%, Fasciolopsis buski 0.2%, Fasciola hepatica 0.2%, Dicrocoelium dendriticum 0.007%, Entamoeba histolytica 2.0%, Entamoeba coli 4.1%, Entamoeba hartmanni 0.2%, Endolimax nana 0.9%, Iodamoeba buetschlii 0.6% , Giardia lamblia 1.1%, Balantidium coli 0.1%,Blastocystis hominis 0.2%, Trichomonas hominis 0.003% and Taenia sp. 0.05%. Polyparasitism occurred in 21.1% of the infected people. Among the detected parasites, F. hepatica, F. buski, C.sinensis, D. dendriticum, S. stercoralis, T. hominis and E.hartmanni were the first records in Gansu. Data review indicated a wild distribution of echinococcosis cases in the province(Jiayuguan Prefecture not affected).
