Abstract: This paper reports on the distribution of intestinal parasitic infection of the local inhabitants in 66 pilot sites randomly selected from 20 counties in Hunan Province during 1987-1990. Out of 34616 persons examined, 22964 (66.3%) were found to be infected with one or more species of intestinal parasites. Twenty-one species of parasites including 7 species of nematodes, 2 cestodes, 3 trematodes and 9 protozoa were discovered. The infection rate of nematodes was higher than that of the other species, the roundworm being the highest (61.1%). Statistically, a significant correlation exists between the prevalence and geographical type, nationality, socioeconomic status of the district as well as the age, sex, cultural level of the population.
