Abstract: Abstract A survey of human intestinal parasitic infections was made in two pilot sites located at Changjiang County, Hainan Province. Of 1 053 people under fecal examination, 969 were found to infect with intestinal parasites, the overall infection rate being 92.0%. The detected parasites included 6 species of nematodes, 2 species of trematodes and 6 species of protozoa. The infection rates for different species were noted as: Ascaris lumbricoides 51.7% , Trichuris trichiura 40.7%, hookworm 58.9%, Enterobius vermicularis (below 12 years old) 50.7%, Strongyloides stercoralis 0.3%, Trichostrongylus sp. 0.2%, Dicrocoelium dentriticum 0.2%, Clonorchis sinensis 0.1%, Hymenolepis diminuta 0.4%, Entamoeba histolytica 8.3%, Giardia lamblia 7.8%, Iodamoeba buetschlii 1.3%, Endolimax nana 1.0% and Blastocystis hominis 1.4%. The proportion of polyparasitism was as high as 66.7% among the infected residents. Age based analysis revealed the highest infection rate of A.lumbricoides (55.7%-63.2%) in children below 14 years old; and the infection rate of hookworm showed a tendency of ascending with age. The severeness of human intestinal parasitic infections in situ is obvious.
